I might just have a job…

November 7, 2007

On November 14, at 10:30 AM, I have an interview to teach biology at Longview College in SKC (Lee’s Summit)…please pray about his because I:

1) really need a job to stay at MBTS and in KCMO

2) Would love to have this particular job!

3) really, really need a job if I plan on eating anytime!

 More on this later….

The most recent happenings…

November 1, 2007

My first seminary mid-term went great: I think I actually over-studied since some of the stuff I memorized wasn’t even on the test! Now I have the joy of writing a paper on Esther and acculturation in order to get an A in the class!

I won a raffle this week: the prize was a signed copy of “A Theology of the Church” by Daniel Akin, president of SEBTS. I am thoroughly excited since I was planning on buying the book anyway…whenever I get a job and have enough money!

I have broken out the blue jeans since it has become frosty and chilled in the mornings here in NKC…my fashion sense has improved accordingly!

…and yes, I am still addicted to WOW: Level 14 on one, Level 12 on the other

Hello, my name is A-dub and I am an addict…

October 23, 2007

…of World of Warcraft! My neighbor, Tyler, is a WOW prodigy and convinced me to try to play the game. Well, long story short, I really like it and now have to force myself to stop playing to eat and sleep…though I still have enough willpower to finish my classwork first! If I get a job soon, I will be saving money to buy a computer that my other enabler, Brent, will build for me!

School is going well…nothing much to report there…my first mid-term will be next Tuesday…and yes, this is WELL past the midpoint of the semester!

Pray that I can get this teaching job I am up for at Longview College…I really need the money…and no, not just for my WOW addiction!

For those who want to know, I will be back East for Christmas, between Dec. 18 and New Year’s.

In other (random) news, I found out that I now have an adverse reaction to soda…so I am drinking water, juice, and tea exclusively!

The post-Fall-Break post…

October 15, 2007

First off, I got NOTHING done during the break…except sleeping, eating, and going to the Jehovah’s Witnesses workshop…

…which was excellent! I learned so much. I definitely enjoyed Paul Blizard, a former JW and present Southern Baptist pastor – I actually got to take him to the airport Saturday! (thanks, DB!)

Today, I got the go-ahead to write my paper on Matthew 13 (see previous post)…

Nothing else going on…sorry!

The first week of October…

October 6, 2007

…was relatively uneventful:

Monday: came upon the idea for my first academic paper:  a discussion of Matthew 13 as one common line of thought (sorry Dr. Tom.!).

Tuesday: had an uneventful chapel service, but came upon my second paper idea (thanks Dr. And.!) using Exodus 34:6,7 as a guide to understand God’s use of the Law (and His patience) with Israel

Wednesday: had a wonderful chapel service with Liberated Wailing Wall … and let me say for the record, I heart Jews! (and I love my dormmate, Kenny, twice as much!) Also planned a night of playground golf…

Thursday: …which I and some of the dorm guys enacted, followed by euchre at McDonald’s…I HATE(!) the left bower rule! I also spent three hours researching giving and baptisms in Missouri churches…

Friday: …which I later realized was not what I wanted to look for, so I then spent three hours researching giuving and baptism by state convention to the SBC…exciting stuff, I know! Also, everyone departed for Fall Break…except for me and the faithful hangers-on at the dorm…stay strong, my brothers!

For the record, I have put aside my love of historical research for the time being, that is until I finish my bibliography for OT survey!

so I’m a little obsessed with the library these days…

October 1, 2007

…that is why I haven’t blogged for a week (yes, the library has computers, but I have been pouring over old SBC tomes in search of self-fulfillment….yes, I am a freak!)

The week in review:

Wednesday, we found out that the A/C will not be repaired until spring (it will be completed before then, but turned off for winter). It’s not too bad…if you have an uncompromised window like I do (sorry Tyler!)… and the days are getting shorter and cooler anyway.

Other than that, I have no life besides going to class, going to the library for my daily fix (of knowledge!), eating, sleeping and going to church/chapel…sorry, maybe Fall break (next week) will be more exciting!

Why I don’t want to go to hell…

September 24, 2007

The air conditioning in the dorm broke Saturday night…since then, it has been a balmy/miserable 75 degrees all the time. I know I am being shallow, but I enjoy the privileges and blessings of living in the modern era and in America…living across the hall from two missionary kids (hey Dave and Ben!) doesn’t help my pout.

In other news, the most random thing happened Saturday night, as well. A man from my home church bakc in South Carolina came to visit his grandson, who attends Midwestern as well! We did that “I think I know you” double-take, then warmly greeted each other: really freaky…unless you’re me, a permanent resident of the “it’s a small Christian world”, where everyone I know from some church setting is inevitably connected to everyone else I know from some other church setting! Six degrees of separation, my big toe! More like two!!

Hopefully I’ll post before Saturday…unless I just go do something crazy in the meantime!

The week in review

September 22, 2007

Monday: spent two extra hours with my unofficially official mentor, Dr. T, “let your mantle fall on me, a double portion of your spirit!”, talking about Romans and leaven (it’s a seminary thing!)

Tuesday: was totally bored in OT survey I (corny video on the Exodus), but had the most awesome chapel (in fact, they have all been awesome, but) this guy puh-reached! I thought we were all going to become charismatic!

Wednesday: rocked my Greek grammar (I think everyone hates me in that class!) and pounded out the second listening to Monday’s class recording (note to other seminarians: record your lectures and re-listen…it has definitely helped me!)

Thursday: was totally in awe of how completely stupid some historians were in the early 70′s, I mean seriously, the 45-minute, self-narrated, film on where is Sinai sucked the life and meaning out of me for at least 1.5 hours! Then, to top it all off, read a disturbing anonymous letter and had a “denominational crisis of faith” (the crisis has been averted, but now I am on a righteous quest to right the worngs of carnal Christianity in our midst…pray that I do not become arrogant or sinful myself!)

Friday: professed my love for chicken, Sun Chips (R), and Coke/soda…I also like soft-batch chocolate chip cookies, but that is a different conversation! Again, was (not) surprised when drama went down here at MBTS (see Baptist Press for details)…I might have to drop out and battle the powers-that-be hand-to-hand at this rate (just kidding, Mom!)

 See ya’ll next week!

The drama that is 50 guys in one building…

September 17, 2007

Names have been changed to protect all involved and misdirect the snoopy!

For several weeks now, we have been trying to come up with nicknbames for some of the dorm inhabitants. “Ordo Aptay” refused to accept the name “peaches” and pretty much threw a hissy-fit worthy of that name! With four Andrew’s in the building, the following names (care of Who is Your Google Alter Ego?: http://www.gpeters.com/names/baby-names.php) are now official:

Andrew Burns is henceforth “Paul”

Andrew Goforth (a non-resident, but hangs out with some of us) is henceforth “Zan”

Andrew Huesing is henceforth “Bananaman”

and I am “Danger” , although I will probably go with ”Higgy”, as is appropriate as a contraction for my twelve-letter last name (thanks UGA and Ben G. for popularizing it)

In other news, the upstairs kitchen has been gutted (but remarkably, they left the kitchen sink!) and many residents are in mourning. We will forever be burner-less, they tell us, though we are to make due with an additional microwave!

Tell you more next time!
